DEAR DR. TANIA: I am 66 years old, retired and chasing around my grandkids which tells me I am in decent shape. My doctor wants me to get a scan of my belly. She says since I smoked for about 3 years in college I need this. That was a long time ago. Can something I did that long ago still be relevant to my health?

ANSWER: Smoking 100 or more cigarettes in the past is enough of a risk factor, even if the smoking was a very long time ago and you are currently in good shape. The U.S. Preventative Task Force recommends that all men aged 65 to 75 who have ever smoked undergo a one-time CT scan of the abdomen to screen for an aortic aneurysm, which could be a life threatening condition. An aneurysm is a collection of blood within the lining of the vessel.

DEAR DR. TANIA: I am hearing a lot in the news about the Zika virus and that pregnant women are at risk. Can you tell me more about it and what I can do to protect myself?

ANSWER: Zika is a virus that is transmitted largely by mosquito bite but also through sexual contact. It has spread to 29 countries so far in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The Zika virus has been identified in about 100 U.S. citizens returning from those countries. A recent case of the virus being locally acquired in the United States was a Texas resident who had sex with someone who visited Venezuela. More than a dozen sexually transmitted cases in the U.S. are being investigated. This has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to advise pregnant women to protect themselves if their male sexual partner has traveled to a country with the Zika virus. Zika is linked to a brain disorder in babies of infected mothers. Given the rapid spread of the Zika virus, the World Health Organization recently a “public health emergency of international concern.”

DEAR DR. TANIA: My son had an allergic reaction to egg nog last year and now it is time for our flu shot. What is in a live vaccine? Which flu vaccine should my child get?

ANSWER: An egg allergy should not preclude a person from getting the flu shot. Although there are very trace amounts of ovalbumin (egg protein) present in the flu vaccine, the current recommendation is that the flu shot can still be given. Egg nog contains raw egg, but if your son can tolerate lightly cooked eggs such as scrambled eggs or French toast, the flu shot can be given.

DEAR DR. TANIA: The other day I was just sitting at my desk and I leaned back over my chair to grab my coffee cup and the room started spinning! I felt like I could not stand up and I had to hold the wall. It got so bad I went to the ER and the doctor had me lay down and twist my head and body. The symptoms went away after doing this a bunch of times. They said I had BPPV. What does that stand for and why did they have me lay down and twist my body? It worked and I have no idea why.
